can an external hard drive be used to store more than just music, videos, and picture? like can it store programs and games etc. onto my notebook ? are there any external hard drives that are made in japan that i can buy at best buy or circuit city? if there arent any made in japan, what is the best brand?

Yes you can; however, since it is an external hard drive, it will take longer to run a program, play a game,..etc. Remember, an external hard drive connections via a USB or Firewire port. There are limits on connection speeds via these ports. I highly recommend Western Digital and Maxtor. I have used both and they perform perfectly. And, their prices are fairly reasonable.

I have a 300gig Samsung external harddrive and have had no problems with it. On it I store all my music, videos, pictures, documents, games and program installer files..
Not sure if your question is asking if you can store programs on there or install them on there and run them from it, but no you need to install them to your C: drive but you can store the actual install files on the external.

it can store anything you want it to store. Im sure you can buy them at best buy or circuit city. As for brand, i think hard drives are hard drives. You get what you pay for speed-wise and storage-wise.
