Depends on the size of the turtle and how many you have. General rule of thumb is 10 gallon/inch of shell. So, if you have a one 5 inch long turtle or two 2.5 inch turtles, a 50 gallon would be ideal. Female RES can get quite large, like the size of a dinner plate--one may need a 75-100 gallon tank. Keep in mind you need an excellent filter system and frequent water changes as well.

For a male or female turtle?
For a female...they should typically have 100 or more gallon tanks, and males, around 80-90 gallons of tank.
There should be 10 gallons of water for every inch of shell your turtle has. So, 4 inches of shell would mean a 40 gallon tank at minimum.
And remember, if your turtle is not fully grown, it is going to get BIGGER.
Getting a 100 gallon tank or bigger would be your best bet so you wouldn't have to keep upgrading tanks for your turtle. And you could save lots of money too.
I wouldnt get anything lower than a 90 gal.

try 120gallons...
Red eared sliders need about 10 gallons per inch of the shell, plus basking space... so if i were you, even if the turtle is small now, would get a bigger tank. you can raise the water level as the turtle grows. make sure that you provide lots of restinh spots (plants and rocks) for your turtle in the water. visit

when you're fortunate sufficient to get a male (it really is no longer achieveable to sex a juvenile with out danger to it or your wallet), you'll get by ability of with a one hundred-gallon tank. the guideline is a minimum of 10 gallons in accordance to inch of shell. that is cumulative, except that, once you've better than one turtle, bump the minimum as a lot not less than of 15 gallons in accordance to inch. Sliders do no longer "artwork and play properly with others", because it used to say on my record card.
