There are three types of steroids:

1) Corticosteroids- Any of the natural or synthetic hormones associated with the adrenal cortex, which influences or controls key processes of the body, as carbohydrate and protein metabolism, electrolyte and water balance, and the functions of the cardiovascular system, the skeletal muscle, the kidneys, and other organs.

--These steroids are found in prescription and non-prescription creams and ointments that control rashes and itching. Two common trade names are Cortaid(R) and Lanacort(R).

2) Estrogens and Progestogens- These are the female sex hormones. They are responsible for the development of secondary sexual characteristics in women and maintain the female reproductive system.

--Estrogens and progestogens are the active ingredients in prescription birth control tablets.

3) Androgens- Testosterone is the androgen that leads to the development of male secondary sexual characteristics and maintains the male reproductive system.

--Testosterone is commonly prescribed in the treatment of female breast cancer, androgen deficiency, and for stimulation of growth, weight gain, and red blood cell production. These are commonly known as "anabolic steroids" because they promote muscle growth. They are also commonly used to help patients recover from a surgery and cancer treatment that resulted in damage to muscle tissue

forms it comes in are

The powder and tablet forms are taken orally

Liquid forms are taken orally or injected

Topical agents and creams are applied on the surface of the muscle area

that is all the info i could find.

Inhalers for asthma are a legal steriod that help children and adults the other day, why don't you find information on that? You could do a good vs. bad steriod paper, to prove that not all of them are bad.

steroids......they r used for various reasons in the body ex-to help with breathing, to reduce the cerebral pressure, for different types of arthritis. prednisone, solumedrol are example of steroids, they r legal drugs and gets from the pharmacy wtih a Rx from your doctor.
prednisone -for ex. comes in tabs in diff, 5 ,10, 20mg, and also as syrup for kids. often given for kids with asthma, bronchitis, pneumonia etc....
eventhough its legal, it has gross side effects like weight gain, dependency, rashes, pt. having diabetes, may get high blood sugar with frequent use of steroids.
how it helps-it activates adrenal glands, stimulating adrenocorticoid hormones so if a child/adult having respitory distress,if given prednisone, it helps in increasing power of oxygenation in lung tissues...................k.
