You underestimate hockey goalies. The net is four foot by six foot, for a total of 24 square feet. Even a sumo wrestler is not going to cover every inch of that amount of space. A puck is only three inches across and one inch thick. You don't need much room to score with one, and shooters can shoot as hard as 100 mph. All they need is a corner, and even a sumo wrestler is not going to cover each corner. And although they are more quick and flexible than you would think, at that size their flexibility and quickness is not going to be up-to-par for a goalie. So how are they going to stop the puck from going into each and every crevice they leave wide open? Not only would they not make good goalies, they would be EASY goals for a skilled shooter. Factor in the cost of trying to put padding on them (a hockey puck would KILL a goalie who did not have proper protection), and that pretty much makes this a useless idea. There are no weight requirements for goalies, but there ARE size requirements for the padding. You couldn't outfit a sumo wrestler even if you wanted to. Personally, I wouldn't want to.

Because they wouldnt be able to move as quickly as a more in shape goalie can, and has to in order to save goals. Have you ever seen how fast goalies move, or how flexible their hips are for that matter? Goaltending is a hard job it's not just blocking pucks. They also have to deal with other players crowding them, since the no-players in the crease rule was taken out. If a goalie was 800 pounds and fell over, anyone could shoot that puck in, he wouldn't be able to move fast enough to stop it.

Whenever I see a Bruin's game, I think that. Thomas is like the South Park goalie, a blob that just kinda wiggles his fat to keep the puck out. I think if a Sumo was atually physically healthy enough to get cleared to play for a whole game, it would be on like donkey kong, but who would take the responsibility for putting a morbidley obese man through such grueling activity? And who would pull his cardiac arrest ridden body off the ice?

Because even a summo wrestler would:

a) not be able to fill the entire goal
b) move around for 60 minutes with all that equipment on three to four times a week

stupid question, but a common one. First of all, the old rule that the fattest kid gets thrown in the net is out of date. Back in the day, it was common to put the worst skater or fattest kid in the net, because it requires less skating, and fat kids take up alot of room. Nowadays, goalies must be some of the best skaters on the team. Goalies dont skate in the same way as skaters. Goalies need to be able to move laterally across the crease, and change directions at anytime. Agility is a must in order to be a productive goalie. No sumo wrestler would ever be able to (a) stand up on skates long enough to be productive, (b) have enough agility to move on skates, (c) be healthy enough to perform multiple times a week. Goalies are athletes. I challenge you to be a goalie in one practice and see how you do if you dont believe me. Alot of the things seen on tv are alot harder then they look. It takes, skill, practice, flexability, and determination to be a successful goalie.

Hockey teams look for athletic ability and not size with all of the new specs. It seems like you would be better if you were huge but goalies that are less as big seem to have more quckness and better reaction time. And for your second question there is no weight limit.

I'm a goalie, and we onece played a team with a HUGE goalie. We creamed them, because it wasn't very hard to shoot the puck in either the 5-hole or somewhere else where he didn't cover up. I short, fat people have slow reflexes.

Because if they sat on a puck, it would disappear in their loin cloths and would take an hour to find it, if at all. Reallly slow up the game.

Where to start, my spelling and grammar challenged lad? I assume you mean sumo wrestlers and why...well, my guess is none skate nor have any hockey skills. No, there are not any weight requirements to play goal, Gump Worsley.
