Still prehistoric, from a human point of view.
Most technological, social, religious and mental progress comes from asking something that you either don't know the answer to or which you haven't personally experienced.
Contemplating the hypothetical drives us to realize our dreams. Without scientists asking "What if......." to things that haven't been done before, progress is illusory and pretty much non-existant.
Our ability to visualise the unknown and the yet-to-be is what allows us to advance.
In philosophy, hypothetical questions are key to discerning between the flawed and the valid, as well as testing beliefs to an absolute. Without that, there would be almost no way to tell if someones assertions were flawed or hypocritical or inherantly contradictory, and even the most insanely self confused arguments would have to be accepted.

We need the hypothetical to progress, discern, understand, explore.....without it we would hardly be human.....
