my clutch is bad because i can let the pedal out while its in gear and it will not jerk the car foward and it will not stall.
my question is do i need to buy the whole clutch or just a pressure plate or something else? and also how do i know for SURE that its not just the clutch but could it be slippage?

put the e brake on,2nd gear, let out the clutch. if it does'nt stall, it's the clutch. replace clutch, pressure plate, release bearing, and pilot bushing. if it's an internal slave cylinder(hydraulic clutch only) you may want to replace that as well. there should be no more in labour costs if you do this now. if you have to go back for pressure plate later, your paying all the labour again. a thorough job also involves resurfacing the flywheel.

If you have a hydraulic slave cylinder that might be bad or low on fluid. Since you didn't mention make, year or model, we can only guess.
Other than that you might need both a clutch disc and pressure plate. It's not a good idea to replace one without the other.
It might also be a simple adjustment needed.

If your clutch is slipping that bad you will need a clutch plate, pressure plate, throwout bearing and possibly a flywheel. If the flywheel gets hot it will crack, if it is cracked it may or may not be able to be reused. Either way it will have to be resurfaced.

you could try to adjust the clutch rod.
Sounds like you need a plate though if it was me I would get a new clutch it will probely save you money in the future depends on how old it is.
you could also open your trans and fill it up with gear oil just in case.
