I need to turn my modem into a wireless modem, much to my dismay. I have bought a wireless router and an access point. Are these the only things I need in order for the wireless network to talk to eachother? Can an access point be used in the same manner as say, a PCI wireless adapter card? I jsut did not want to crack open my PC and install a card.

Wall---->modem--->wireless router---->

PC---->access point

No, the access point was the wrong thing to buy, it's another server end device. You needed a wireless adapter, either a plug in card or a USB adapter. The task an AP does is very different, it won't connect to the wireless router unless it has mesh connectivity and you aren't going to find many of those yet. You can set up a pair of wireless adapters in an ad-hoc network, but not a pair of APs, which is what an access point and a wireless router are.

Look for something like a D-Link DWL-G120, but they are becoming less common as more 802.11 functionality is built in.

Your access point needs to be setup as a repeater and it will get IP address from the router and pass it on. Follow the instructions for the wireless router and for the Access point to set up for WDS.
In this way the wireless router Will pass the signal to the Acessspoint which in turn will pass to the PC.
