Technically it's a "stator" and it will have three wires that go to the voltage regulator. Somewhere between the stator and voltage regulator is a plug, disconnect it, get engine running at say half throttle and with a multi meter set to AC voltage check the three pair on the stator side. In other words, one pair is right and left, another is right and middle and the other is middle and left. I don't know what the normal output is, but each pair should produce approximately the same voltage, probably in the 30-60 volt AC range for your engine. Don't worry if it's higher or lower, just that all three are pretty much the same. If the stator is bad, one pair will show much less or nothing. As far as repairing a stator, that's not practical. You'll need many, many feet of varnished copper wire, wrap each segment with the proper number of turns of wire and then varnish the whole works. A stator goes bad when the varnish breaks down and lets two wires touch.

If your Gravely has a single cylinder Kohler engine, I'd suspect the voltage regulator before the stator because they were known to fizzle out on more than one occasion.

Even though you have a couple of different spellings in your question from the test you describe I believe you have tested your tractors starter motor, and you have done it correctly. Find an automotive machine shop in your area (I doubt Pep Boys or Autozone will be able to help), you may have to look, but, someone will be able to rebuild it for you. You didn't say if your Gravely was old or not, some of those things have been around a long time. I'll bet there are owners clubs you could find on-line, and that would be a great source of info and parts for you.
