D Mac gives you a good lay out. Notice what he did? Whatever you do to one side of the = sign, do to the other. He gives it short and sweet. You could spend a month adding and subtracting to get the same answer.

subtract 1 leaving u with -1/3x>2
divide by -1/3 and switch the sign giving u x<-6

1/3x < -2 => x > -1/6

1-1/3x>3subtract one from both sides get:
-1/3x>2
divide both sides by -1/3 get:
x<-6
