That is actually an excellent question; one of the more original ones I have heard.
I guess I would ask Fred Thompson about his leading the fight in deregulating the Savings and Loan industry in the 80's, a move that led to a collapse of the system and ultimately cost the US taxpayer hundreds of billions of dollars.
