Why do so many people insist on putting LoL in their messages? I know its supposed to mean 'lots of love' or, lots of laughs' but sometimes the LoL seems totally inappropriate where it has been put; so why put it?

lol.

I never heard "lots of love", or "lots of laugh". I only heard "Laugh out Loud".

LOL is also a sign of embarrasment. It can indicate sarcasm and that the question isn't truely serious.

I occasionally put lol (laugh out loud) after something funny because you can't read people's body language online and its sometimes hard to tell whether someone is joking, it can let people know your just taking the mick or trying to be funny.

But i do agree there are alot of people that seem to post it after pretty much everything thay say and its lame.

Laugh out loud ! Its very difficult in text or email to get across your tone and in some instances without a lol we could be construde as being offensive when in fact no offence was meant at all.

Come on, your to cute to act so ugly. Laugh out loud is only my way of laughing back to you. Lighten up on us old folks. LOL! I'm really not old. Hah! Hah! is that better? I mean, what am I suppose to put? Nothing like me answering a question and ending it with another question. I am confused now. Hee, hee, hah, hah, LOL, ??????

I think it should be a reportable offence on this site - after all, this is NOT a text-phone, and the use of these silly text abbreviations on this site should be banned. They are annoying to those of us who take the trouble to write a question or answer properly and are, as far as I can see, used almost entirely by people who simply can't be bothered to phrase their Q or A with a bit of thought - hence they feel the necessity to use these silly abbreviations as a form of apology ! ! !

I took it to mean, 'laugh out loud'

I think its a way of letting people know there 'light hearted' with what they say , people can read things out of context ,
you don't have voice tone or visibility to see a persons face expressions when they communicate by type .
