It seems to be almost an natural thing for people to do. For some reason, people need to feel like they are not alone. Membership in a group can make a person feel safe and stronger. There seems to be the fear of being alone to face themselves and maybe they don't want that. Isolation can be natural or unatural due to a person's personality. Sometimes a person who is a loner isolates themselves deliberately. Isolation can be an unwilling event because of a disability. As far as building walls well, that can mean something entirely different.

There is a certain amount of security in surrounding yourself with others like yourself. The members of the clique share similar though processes and ideals that make their actions more predictable to those in the clique. There is also the factor of exploring similar interests which serves as a bonding experience.
Cliques that become separatist generally perceive others as a threat to the structure of the clique or unworthy to be a part of it. In these cases, confrontation or ridicule becomes the defense mechanism of the clique in an attempt to maintain the clique structure.

People form cliques because they have common interests. "Birds with the same feather flock together." Why do they sometimes isolate themselves? because they have developed a certain sub-culture that may not be acceptable to the general public or may be contrary to other cliques. This is a natural tendency of matter. Water cliques with other water but it never cliques with oil. Don't make it a problem. It's but natural.

I think people form cliques and isolate others because of a need to feel accepted and to feel better by making others feel bad. I think people put up walls because they are afraid of exposing themselves and being rejected or getting hurt. But really it depends on the person and what he or she is going through.

Great Question. I myself, have made various observation about it. I think it is terrible, way to be. They obviously can not function and I have seen this to be true, without their various cliques around. It is truly a shame. Something, I myself, could never understand. I don't lose any sleep over it, either. LOL

I think it has a lot to do with alpha behavior and also insecurities, respectively. Even in the animal world, the alpha groups are segregated from the weaker groups. Because of insecurities that people face, they tend to accept this behavior and because of those insecurities form bullies.

Because birds of a feather flock together.
People like people who are like themselves. And conversely, people dislike those who are different from themselves.
The adage "opposites attract" only applies some of the time.

Almost everything in psychology comes down to one thing: Coping...
Some people cope better by isolating themselves, it makes their life more manageable.
