Okay, before everyone just goes off on me for asking this question, just think about it.

Why shouldnt the nhl use a shootout to decide playoff games? You cant say that a regular season game isnt important- last season, the eastern conference was decided on a single shootout.

If the shootout isn't used in the playoffs, why should it be used in the regular season?

BTW- I'm not saying I am for or against this, I just want to hear people's opinions on this issue.

I hate the idea of any game having a shoot out whether it is regular season or playoffs. Im a big fan of the overtimes and if they had shoot outs in the playoffs, the playoffs wouldn't be that exciting.

I would hate to see the NHL go to a shootout in the playoffs. The reason playoff hockey is so awesome are the extended overtime games (the 2, 3, and 4 overtime games). Sitting on the edge of your seat not knowing when the winning goal will come. It is an emotional rush that you can't get with a shootout. If the players are getting too tired, too bad. If they want something, the league should give them an extra day off for overtime games. The Stanley Cup is the greatest trophy in all of sports and needs for than just a skills competition to win it. You need to show that you have enough to endure at least 16 of the hardest games you will ever play in a season.

They use the shoot out as a way for teams to collect points. Come playoff time, points mean nothing. It has nothing to do with the regular season being less meaningful. The shootout came about becasuse teams were sitting back being content with garnering one point. This now makes it interesting.

Like you stated, the conference was won by one point. What would the difference have been if the tie game was still in effect? Probably a lot different.

I don't think a 3 overtime regular season game would have near the meaning of 3 overtime playoff game. The shootout is not about the players or points, its to make it exciting for fans.

The regular season isn't AS important as the playoffs. And it would be ridiculous to decide something as important as the winner of the Cup over an individual: hockey's a team game. Plus, those marathon games are great to watch!

By the way, you are arguing for shootouts in the playoffs or else you wouldn't've brought it up.

Simply put: no one wants to lose the Stanley Cup in the seventh game of a hard-fought series on a gimmick. It is as simple as that. Sounds great until it's YOUR team on the other end of that seventh-game shootout loss. You'd never forgive yourself for wishing for this.

Can you imagine a team working they're a$$e*s off all game for the win and all of a sudden, the game is decided in penalty shots??? what if the team isn't built for skill? what a if a team is built to play as a team?

i also think the shootout in the regular season is stupid!

Personally, I think they should just scrap the shootout all together. Afterall, it's a team sport.
