depends on who u are, bonds is no better than the ones u listed, politics play alot in the pro sports, if they would go on character half the hall wouldnt be in, its just a excuse they will use for bonds to justify his rejection, like rose what he did was as a manager not a player, last i seen there was 2 diff cat for that, but thats politics for ya

first of all, the nfl is very clear that vorets are only to consider on the field stuff. still though, it affects the way the electors vote. so fordget about comparing football to baseball.

with baseball, (as in all of society), values have changed since the days of ruth and mantle. back in the day, the media had no problem with guys drinking, chasing women, smoking, and other stuff that society frown apon now. and in the case of both the guys you mentioned, they were both harmless good natured guys.

all of this has nothing to do with bonds either. he has only been indicted by a federal grand jury for perjury. for this he may get in serious legal trouble; and in the course of sorting all of this out, it may become EVEN more obvious that he did ped, and broke baseballs rules. BUT EVERYONE ALREADY KNOWS THAT. if this is proven, he will not be allowed in the hall of fame...just that simple! don't ever lie to a grand jury.....

Scary thought The Babe and The Mick supposedly being drunks ,Imagine what they would have done if they weren't ?Like I said a scary thought . Having said that whatever damage Ruth or Mantle may have done they did to themselves and not the game.
The actions of Rose ,Bonds ,McGwire et al hurt the game-big difference
Article 5 of the Rules of Election to the HOF reads:
"Voting -Voting shall be based upon a player's record. playing ability, integrity, sportsmanship ,character ,and contributions to the team(s) for which he played "

But they were never accused of cheating. And lets face facts Bonds going into the Hall of Fame diminishes more of the legacy of the Hall of Fame than it increases.

People already viewed him as a cheater and he was vilified by everyone but his fans.

Now not only is his charcter in question but so are all of his accomplishments in baseball.

Even if he is not convicted he will never be viewed as a player in the class of Ruth, or Mantle anymore

Others are right Mantle and Babe did not cheat at the game only cheat on their bodies.

It's more of an excuse clause than a binding criteria.

NO ONE says anything less than sterling about Dale Murphy's character, but that hasn't been winning him extra votes.

So little you know about baseball. Less about people.
