I've noticed that many hardware stores sell batteries that can trickle charge your car's battery through the cigarette lighter overnight. Many boxes seem to advertise that it will keep your battery at the "ideal starting temperature". Are they referring to keeping your car battery warm overnight? Or something else?

I'm a rookie, any input would be great, thanks.

if your car doesnt have any electrical loads while it is off.(which it shouldnt, regardless of age) and you have a decent battery then you should be fine. that kind of stuff is more of a quick fix for minor problems.

That plan can't fly. Reason being the cigarette lighter has to provide voltage from your cars alternator to work correctly. If you simply plug in an accessory while the engine is off you'll kill the battery in less than an hour.

A regulated 2 amp trickle charger will work fine if you use household 110 current and a 14 gage extension cord. You can find these at Sears and Walmart in the automotive section.

all they do is keep your battery charged up fully, they really don't warm them up. If your battery is new you don't need anything like that and basically they are for when your car is going to be sitting without being started for a couple of months.
