The Size of the button hole should be...?

if you plan to attach a flat 1/2 in. button to garment. the size of the buttonhole should be
1/2 in.

The hole should be only slightly larger than the button. 3/8 in. is too small, and 1/2 in. doesn't give you enough clearance (it's too tight a fit). I'd go with 5/8, since that's slightly larger than your button.
