well it depends, in what area your talking about. area being what you'd like to be, where you live, if you want to travel etc. it also depends on how you define "best" . In general the ivy league schools(harvard, yale, brown, cornell etc.) of course, if you're talking about general education and top ratings. I think there is only one person who can answer your question and that is you. You can get other people's opinions, but you may want to be a bit more specific.

Best colleges in general? Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford....
You shouldn't apply to schools just because they are considered the "best". You should consider what you like doing and what you want to do in college since the "best" colleges might not fit your goals or even you. You should apply to schools that best fit you and is in an enviroment you will enjoy being in for 4 or so years. A lot of my friends in high school got accepted to the ivies but we all individually decided that the UCs suited us better. So my advice is to expolore what you would like to learn in college and from there, determine which college best matches what you want to learn.

What studies will you be pursuing? And in what part of the country do you live and what year of high school are you?

My son started checking out colleges in his junior year of high school thru his guidance counselor at school.. ....they should have a list of various colleges that will gladly send you brochures.
A couple of my favorites are Purdue University in Indiana and Washington University in St Louis Missouri.
