Lewis and Clark had 3 general goals.
1)Survey and explore the land we bought.
2)Try to make peace with any natives they came across. The had peace medallions that they would give out to show their intent.
3) To get to the coast to dispel any claims the British had to the Washington/Oregon area.
As short as I can explain it. Hope this is enough.

Jefferson's Instructions for Meriwether Lewis (see link below for a transcript of the letter):
"The letter combined national aspirations for territorial expansion with scientific discovery. Here Jefferson sketched out a comprehensive and flexible plan for western exploration. That plan created a military exploring party with one key mission--finding the water passage across the continent "for the purposes of commerce"--and many additional objectives, ranging from botany to ethnography." (quote from the Library of Congress webpage)
My own words: Jefferson still believed that a "Northwest Passage" was possible which would connect the US to the Indies, Asia, and the Orient. This passage would be a route by water, which was the best way to haul heavy loads of goods for sale and trade - the railroad hadn't been invented yet.
However, since the land had not been explored and recorded using scientific methods, Jefferson also wanted factual data on the peoples, plants, animals, geography, terrain, etc. For this reason, Lewis and Clark kept extensive journals.

It was actually Thomas Jefferson who sent them on the expidition. He wanted them to understand the land, survey it, and collect information on the plants, animals, and land. It took them a year to hit the pacific ocean and get back to the colonies. I believe it was Lewis who commited suicide after the expedition. Dont know if that tid bit matters to you tho

I assume you mean Thomas Jefferson. He wanted them to explore the area and let him know what was there. If it was habitable. Draw maps.
