Answers are different depending on where you are, so I'll answer for my home, the very flammable Southern California. The most dangerous fire season is the fall here, because it comes at the end of our long dry season and that is when we have the strong, hot dry Santa Ana winds. Fires start various ways: they may start with vegetation coming into contact with power lines, campfires getting out of control, arson, or lightning. Lightning does not usually start our damaging fires where I live, though. Once a fire is started, the moisture content of the vegetation and the wind speed are the two controlling factors. In our recent fires the combination led to some very hot fires--hot enough to melt car engines, for exampe.

Rocky mountains here.

HOUSE fires is winter because of space heaters, Christmas decorations and candles. People try a lot of things to get warm and some are REALLY dumb and careless with what they do.

FORREST fires is summer to fall because of lack of rain and the underbrush gets so dry. Even a shard of broken glass can start a fire if the sun hits it wrong.
