The easiest way out is always to tell the truth. Which by coincidence is also the hardest.

Because the easiest way out of anything generally leads one to take a path of "the least resistance", not confronting issues, and quiet possibly not being honest with ones self and others as well; all of which will eventually cycle back around to you in one form or another..........it will be harder to undo later as you will no longer have just the initial issue to deal with but also the issue's caused by avoiding the initial issue in the first place. That makes it harder.

I think that taking the Easiest Way Out often means settling for less, it compromises what you really want out of life and you end up with less then what you deserve!!

Sometimes 'the easiest way out' is to simply agree to disagree. Or to not be right, just be silently correct.

Dude... That's easy.... :P You end up working so hard to find a way around a situation, that you end up putting more effort into avoiding it than it would take to just deal with it.
As Isaac Brock (Modest Mouse, in their song, Florida) might say, "Well, it took so much effort not to make an effort".

Someone here, already said it... suicide... not that it'd be the hardest, but the most permanent and final.

If you lie, it's easy. At least the first lie is. The 3rd and 4th lie gets hard, since you have to cover up other lies.
