it opened up the western land for settlement...helped encourage the principle of manifest destiny...made relations ith indians for whites to move west...jefferson hoped it would promote an agrarian society of independence farmers which would create equality unlike the industries which created slums and poor classes...it increased jefferson's popularity-proving federalists to be weak and sectionalist (new england based) and made the us a more powerful country beginning the gaining and settling of western territory in the furture

It finally answer the question of whether or not there was a Northwest Passage. Lewis and Clark found no NW passage, meaning there was no easy river passage across the U.S. It established trading with Indian tribes along the way. Lewis and Clark helped start the American tradition of the "rugged individualist" that has shaped the culture of the West.
