I have to do a presentation on the Mormons during the Civil War, and I need as much information as possible. I would also request for ideas about a presentation. Does anyone know of what I should do (ie: power point, slide show, etc.) ?

The major role was that Brigham Young supported Lincoln and the Union. The Utah territory and other areas with a Mormon population stayed loyal. This freed other Union troops from being garrisoned in the west. There was an article about 12 or 13 years ago in Civil War Times about it.

Well just toclear this up. It is said that a few mormons did join the confederate army and most that did served in the west( Texas and New Mexico), but again not in super large numbers.I really think it had more to do with the treatment they recived during the "Mormon War" than anything else and was kinda a payback to the Union.

The Civil War was indeed inevitable because its major cause was economic, not slavery. It was a contest for who was to control the rich lands of the West, the industrial North, or the agrarian South. Two completely diverse areas trying to live under the same system of economics and law. The clash was inevitable and resulted in the Civil War. Chow!!

Hi friend. Just ignore the silly answers in response to your question. Most people who think they understand "Mormonism" are actually ignorant of its beliefs.

Your assignment is a very challenging one! By the time of the civil war, Mormons had moved to Utah. We did not participate in the civil war one way or the other, because we'd been essentially expelled from the United States 13 years earlier.

The only connection I can think of is a prophecy made by Joseph Smith, the "founder" of the Mormon Church, in 1832, about 25 years before the war began.

"I prophesy, in the name of the Lord God, that the commencement of the difficulties which will cause much bloodshed previous to the coming of the Son of Man will be in South Carolina. It may probably arise through the slave question. This a voice declared to me, while I was praying earnestly on the subject, December 25th, 1832. "
