The above answers are correct. However in a home I call those particular ceilings: UGLY!!

Certainly all valid answers. Good thought Steve. Dropped ceilings are 1970's as far as residential is concerned.

The substance of the "Tiles" is often a recycled blend of fiberous material; similar to shredded pulped cardboard.

I do a lot of them commercially; and dislike them on principal; however I GET IT. I often find I have to have a half dozen cases over; for OOOPS. They are easily damaged in installs.

DROPPED CEILINGS SO THAT THE ELECTRICAL WIRES CAN BE RUN INSIDE SO THEY CAN'T BE SEEN.
