Most of the answers here are correct but here's the psychology you wanted:

Admitting we are wrong causes something called cognitive dissonance. Cognitive dissonance is a psychological term describing the uncomfortable tension we feel as a result of having two conflicting thoughts at the same time. Humans have built in dislike for cognitive dissonance that helps us keep all our thoughts consistent and correct.

So when we admit we are wrong we have to overcome the uncomfortable feeling that cognitive dissonance causes before we are able to correct our thoughts and feel better again

Because if we came up with an idea or opinion, we are positive that it is the correct one. To be proven wrong is a blow to the ego, but as one mellows with age, it is easier to see ideas, opinions as being equal, even if it means changing a long held opinion.

In a nutshell: Our egos take it hard, when we are proven wrong.

Pride - it hurts our pride and makes us feel incompetent. Better to stay at war for the wrong reasons then say I made a mistake. People respect a person who sticks to their guns passionately even if they are wrong.

I will only admit i,am wrong when i,am wrong. I dont find it hard to admit that. We are living in the 21st century now; people that dont like admitting that they are wrong are still living in the 18th century.

It's because some people just refuse to be wrong! And even if they realize they are, they try to change the other persons mind.

I think it has something to do with not wanting to face the embarrassment that comes along with being wrong.
