the situation: a man and his wife are getting a divorce. they have children(ages 9 and 4) and in the state of California, they must both attend a co-parenting class (required by law). The man has done this already. The woman has not. The woman is also exhibiting signs of negligence towards her children: she dropped the 9 year old off at school two hours before school started and there was NO ONE there at the time and she makes them get their own food (this is bad because the 4 year old pretty much eats nothing but cheese and the 9 year old only eats mac and cheese). the woman is constantly saying bad things about the man to the kids and she also uses profanity in front of them.

Question: Who can the man talk to about this? he has no lawyer for the divorce and can't afford one. Is there any way that this can help him get main physical custody of the kids and let the woman have visitation? What can he do?

Social services might move in and decide what is best for the kids.

well if he cant really afford a lawyer then it doesnt seem like he cant get full custody. it wouldn't be in the child's best interest. if he wants adoption to take them to a better home he will have to talk with the agency of child protection services. id suggest talking to them, the second thing he can do is yes talk to a lawyer and figure a way out a payment plan some lawyers do this or give the case as pro bono depending on them.

He needs to call social services when she drops the child off at school 2 hours before it is time. He needs to get information on how to fill out the forms by himself and the court house. He can hire a paralegal (which is cheaper) and have them fill out the paperwork for him. He needs to go to extreme and find out how to do this for his kids sake.

Tell the man to find legal help at a law school. Law schools have hoards of young almost attorneys needing work.

Other wise, tell him to find the money anyway he can. The attorney part is mandatory for him.

Good luck.
