The fetus is not visible, but you can see the gestational sac. It's a black dot in the center or top of the uterus and it is about the size of a golfball or bigger.
Occasionally you can see a tiny dot, which is referred to as a fetal pole. There is no technical fetus until 8 weeks.

5 weeks is too early to see a fetus on a sonogram. You can see a gestational sac when your hcg levels are 2000+. At 5 weeks the fetus is very small and you would probably only see a little black dot if anything. You won't see a heartbeat that early either.

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Usually at 5 weeks you are lucky if you can see the yolk sac. If you had an ultrasound and did not see anything, try not to freak out. I had this happen with most all of my pregnancies, and only one time was it a problem. Give it a couple weeks, and I am sure you will see something. Usually though, or at least with me, they would have me come back in a week for another ultrasound to check for a viable pregnancy! So, try not to stress, and know that 5 weeks is very early to see anything!
Good Luck!

Ushually if you have a transvaginal ultrasound you can see the start of a sac. But sometimes a baby does not show until as late as 7 or 8 weeks.
If you did a regular ultrasound you would not see the baby at all.

yes, it is visible to the trained eye, it might be hard for parents to identify the fetus because of it's unusual shape and tiny size at this gestation age
a couple more weeks and you'll be hearing heart beats!!
Congrats

Yes. It appears as a tiny peanut shaped thing in a sac. Had an ultrasound at 4 weeks pregnant.
It may be necessary to do an internal (vaginal) ultrasound to see it at this stage, as the uterus sits low in the pelvis.

It doesn't look like a fetus. Mine looked like an acorn attached to my placenta in my uterus. I had a really great ultrasound tech that was very happy to explain everything to me.
