It's a good idea to put a bit of bleach when you wash dishes especially if someone as a cold or some other health issue that could spread to other members of the family or guests.
There is no risk because you rinse your dishes after washing them and aside from that you can even add a few drops into drinking water if your water is not chlorinated, so you can tell your co worker that she is wrong ! Cities use chlorine in potable water and swimming pools and in those you swim into the chlorine..

If you need to sanitize dishes because of an illness, this is the process to follow.
1. Wash dishes nornally with only hot water and soap. Be sure to rinse thoroughly to remove all soap.
2. Fill clean sink with COLD water and add the bleach to this water. Add the cleaned dishes to this sanitizing solution and leave for about 5 minutes. (Hot water AND soap break down the disinfecting properties of bleach, making it pointless to add the bleach to the original washing step)
3. I've read you can then air dry at this point but i always rinse first.
I've found my info from the cdc website and other professionals. I do have contamination ocd so i have to do it properly.
Hope this helps.

RE:
how bad is it to wash dishes with bleach?
I have always washed my dishes with a little bit of bleach for sanitation purposes, but a co-worker and I were talking about it the other day and she said it was bad for your health and body.. how true is that? I always make sure to double rinse them if and when I do wash them with bleach.

Bleach is a powerful chemical. Fact: Very small trace amounts can cause bodily damage. Bleach is an oil that degases toxic fumes and is very difficult to clean from a surface completely. It cannot be mixed with soap as it will cause the formation of even more toxic fumes. If you manage to strip the bleach coating from the surface of an item chances are the soap you are using is very astringent to your skin and will eventually cause skin irritation just like the bleach would over time. Bleach should NOT be used on dishes were the water and soap are adequate for cleaning. Bleach is only a additive in industrial cleaning uses, NOT allowed for food processing.

It's probably OK (but very unnecessary) to wash dishes with *just* bleach, as long as you rinse it off well. But if the dish soap specifically says not to mix with bleach then there is a reason! It probably gives off harmful fumes. I would not recommend ignoring warning labels. Maybe you can contact the company and find out exactly why the label is there, and then convince your roommate to stop.

Definitely do not mix the dish soap and bleach as per the label. Dish soap is formulated to clean and decontaminate dishes. Even if there is no harm in mixing bleach in, it would be a pointless task. Also, you may want to ask yourself why your roommate wants to do this regardless. Are they obsessive-compulsive about cleanliness, perhaps? This could present unnecessary problems in the future for you.

When I make my dish water, I use Dawn Power Clean formula, a splash of bleach, and make the water as
hot as I can stand it, or use straight hot water for a presoak period if I have dishes that are really dirty, like pots and pans. I like it not only because the chlorine is well known as a disinfectant, but also because I have
well water with a high iron content that over time discolors my dishes.

I use bleach when I do my dishes and so far none of us have gotten sick, so it is okay. I think as long as you keep rinsing the way you do and don't add any more bleach you should be okay. I like to use it because it kills odors so my next dish doesn't taste like my previous one.
