I live in an apartment and I didn't answer the door when my landlord was knocking because I knew he was going to complain about my treadmill. So I ignored it and he opens the door. Is this legal? Is there anything I can do in San Francisco?

In California, landlords can generally enter without permission in 2 cases:

1) emergency

2) with 24 hours written notice.

If he gave you 24 hours notice, he can enter. Otherwise, it's not legal.

actually check your lease agreement.. I bet there is a clause in there saying the landlord has every right to access the apartment. you are only making things worse for yourself by refusing to answer the door.

What he did was NOT legal. Call the cops, file a report. Contact the local housing authority...he sounds like a creep.

it wont cost u thousands to evict him, read the terms of your lease about right to entry. u have a right to enter the property during normal business hours to m ake NECESSARY repairs. if i were you go to court and sevre him with 30 day notice to evict. (must serve on legal paper and the leasee cannot sevre the papers) then u have to pay a 45.00 fee to start a judgement agaisnt them after the 30 days are up. after this then you go to court. subimit paper work, get court order for case. after case u got to police station give court order to the sheriff and have him comne evict them. bring all documentationt o support your claim. this guy is prolly charging more to his tenant than you are charging him to rent so thats illegal and thats ground for terminating your agreement.
