I work in the schools as a substitute teacher in the jr/sr high schools. One student asked me if I was a lesbian? I am but how do I answer that question. I dont want to hide my sexuality, but I find this question offensive. Any suggestions?

I did tell the student it was rude to ask, but not sure if it the right response. I dont want to give students the impression it is wrong to be gay. Second, how can one act gay? I am me, i wear slacks and polos, tailored shirts, or a sweater. How can one act gay

Yes...don't answer it...
It is NONE of the STUDENT'S business what your sexual orientation is.
You are the TEACHER they are THE STUDENT
I would have found the question offensive myself.

I agree with Wayne - I would have found that question both offensive and inappropriate. However, I fully agree that you should send the message that sexual orientation does not matter. Perhaps, you could couch your response to your pupil along those lines.
As far as revealing your sexual orientation - unfortunately we still must play it safe in some professions. I would not openly disclose that you are a lesbian, BUT I think we all need to openly confront homophobia in all its guises ......

Wow Good Question. I believe its non of their business. It follows the sexual discrimination acts. That includes if you asked a student if they were gay or not..
If they were rude about it then I would say mind your manners or business..
If they were friendly then I would say not sure. Sorry but curious what other people think of my comment as well

Maybe I am and maybe I am not. Are you having any personal problems and need an ally who can help you? Perhaps you can meet with the counselor or I can refer you to an appropriate source (check your school policy).
This way, you deflect answering the question and get to the possible root. If they persist, use sterner language, such as, that is an inappropriate question.

Let the kid know that asking a teacher such a personal question is inappropriate in the school and should refrain from asking questions like that in the future.

This is a very contraversial subject matter in the schools. You may want to say something to the effect that my sexuality is none of your buisness. You may want to also get someone else involved just so it does not backfire

You have an occupational right not to answer this question; and the student SHOULD know not to be asking them.
It goes against school ethics.

Explain that a question like that is to personal and to prying. That will teach as well as answer. Kids need to be guided toward politeness.

Well, it's not really about hiding your sexuality, it's about keeping that jackass in line. Tell him he's rude and move on. Don't say anything that will get your fired.
