why do cold fronts occur? why do they happen? thanks so much!!

They are the boundary between a warm air mass and an advancing cold air mass. Since cold air is denser, it lifts up the warmer air and advances due to it being denser and thus you have what meteorologists call a cold front.

Fronts are boundaries between air masses. If a cold air mass is moving across replacing a warmer air mass, the edge of the cold air mass is the cold front.

If the colder airmass actively displaces the warmer air at the surface, then the front(which is a narrow zone of discontinuity separating the two airmasses) is refered to as cold front.
The main source regions of the airmasses are permanent or quasi-permanent anticyclones where a wek pressure gradient(which is necessary for the formation) exists.
