Coulrophobia is the Fear of Clowns.

What is the cause of Clown Fear?

Like all fears and phobias, clown fear is created by the unconscious mind as a protective mechanism. At some point in your past, there was likely an event linking clowns and emotional trauma. Whilst the original catalyst may have been a real-life scare of some kind, the condition can also be triggered by myriad, benign events like movies, TV, or perhaps seeing someone else experience trauma.

But so long as the negative association is powerful enough, the unconscious mind thinks: "Ahh, this whole thing is very dangerous. How do I keep myself from getting in this kind of situation again? I know, I'll attach terrible feelings to clowns, that way I'll steer clear in future and so be safe." Just like that clown fear is born. Attaching emotions to situations is one of the primary ways that humans learn. Sometimes we just get the wiring wrong.

The actual phobia manifests itself in different ways. Some sufferers experience it almost all the time, others just in response to direct stimuli. Everyone has their own unique formula for when and how to feel bad.

Well, in my case, when I was about 4 I had a bad dream about clowns. It was a clown inside of a jack-in-the-box. I don't remember the dream anymore, but I remember making my parents throw away my clown jack-in-box. I've found clowns to be creepy ever since.

I suspect that the parents hadn't prepared them properly before they saw the first one. When they are told that the guy is funny and will dress up in a way that should make them laugh and what a good guy he is etc. etc. there will be no fear. None of my children ever looked at a clown as anything fearful.

I don't like clowns because I am afraid of balloons. I think my fear of balloons originated from clowns...either way I tend to stay away from both of them. I don’t know what it is exactly that makes me start to hyperventilate (especially in the presence of balloons) I really start to panic. Most people find it hilarious but honestly, it’s not.

A popular early form of clown was the fool, a role that can be traced back as far as ancient Egypt and appears as the first card in the tarot deck. Most fools suffered from some physical or mental deformity, and were given to the local landlord as a charge, because their families were unable to look after them, and the surrounding communities often feared them.

that creep smile, always laughing and happy but not in a good way. It's like they are insanely happy and feel the need to make be insanely happy just like them.I believe that is why they try to make you laugh all the time.

I really don't lke them. I think it's because the make-up hides their face, except for the leering grin. Yeach!!!
