Your question is interesting, on the surface it is a city of interest to the rest of the world. There is the obvious when we speak of the military, and for sure the Spurs. What isn't as obvious is the research that takes place here. We have South West Research, South West Foundation, Brooks AFB, University of Texas, and the list goes on and on. While the killing of some one on the streets of San Antonio may not be news to the rest of the world, a new program designed for NASA's space program is news worthy through out the rest of the world.
I would add that San Antonio has one of the largest School Districts (NISD)in the state and there for is also news worthy to the rest of the state. It should be added that San Antonio is also one of the fastest growing areas in Texas making it not only news worthy to the state but also news worthy to the rest of the United States.

However, as San Antonio is one of the 10 largest cities in the US, one of the top 10 tourist destinations in the US, Military City USA, and home of the World Champion San Antonio Spurs, the city is local, state, frequently national, and occasionally international news!
