VW is the median of a trapezoid that has bases MN and PO, with V on OM and W on PN. If the vertices of the trapezoid are M(2,6) , N(4,6), P(10,0), and O(0,0), find the coordinates of V and W. Our teacher said to use Midpoint to figure it out but thats all she said but im confused can someone out there help?

Okay. The best thing to do first is to graph the points on the xy-plane. Why graph the given points? To make a picture and use it as your guide.

What do we know?

1-We know the coordinates of points MNOP.

2-We also know that V lies between points OM.

3-We also know that W lies between points PN.

4-We also know that to find the coordinates of points V and W, we will need to use the midpoint formula.

Here is the midpoint formula:

midpoint = [(x1 +x2)/2 , (y1 + y2)/2]

I will find the midpoint of OM first and then the midpoint of PN second.

Ready?

midpoint of OM = [(2 + 0)/2, (6 + 0)/2] = (1, 3)

So, the point (1, 3) has the coordinates of V. The coordinates are the numbers INSIDE the parentheses.

Got it?

Now, the other guy.

midpoint of PN = [(4 + 10)/2, (6 + 0)] = (7, 3)

So, the point (7, 3) has the coordinates of W.

We are done!

To figure it out, trace the points in a millimetric paper, and graph the trapezoid.

You will see that V is the middle point du segment OM and W the middle point of segment PN.

Then you apply the formulas

xm = (x1 + x2) / 2
ym = (y1 + y2) / 2

These are the coordinates of middle point

the midpoint formula is

(X2+X1) divided by 2 and (Y2+Y1) divided by two

just plug in the numbers...

V is at ((4+0)/2, (6+0)/2) = (2,3)
W is at ((10+4)/2, (6+0)/2)) = (7,3)
