4/2+3x5-2^2

I first solved the exponent, so the new equation is:

4/2+3x5+4

Then I solved the division and multiplication:

2+15+4

which came to equal 21.

Am I right? I don't quite understand this, the answer key I'm using tells me the correct answer is 13.

You made one mistake -- the exponent applies to the 2, not -2. So you should have 2² = 4

This becomes:
4/2 + 3x5 - 4

Which then simplifies to:
2 + 15 - 4

From there it is straightforward.
= 17 - 4

= 13

You've got the method down, but just need to be careful not to lose a minus sign anywhere along the way.

It is 13 you changed the sign from -2^2 to +2^2 the final step should be 2+15-4 or 13

You changed the minus sign before the 2 to a plus sign, so it's 2 + 15 - 4, or 13

the -2^2 is a minus 2, not a positive 2

You end up getting 17 - 4, which equals 13

assuming you mean (((40 two-eighty two)/4)*4)+7+(12*5)-(40 two/2)-(-4) the respond is 10...the mnemonic to remember the order of operation (do the operations from left to desirable) is "Please Excuse My expensive Aunt Sally" P=parenthesis E=exponentials M=multiplication D=branch A=addition S=subtraction
