My computer slows right down when i've got three web pages open (Firefox browser). For example if i'm signing into MSN while watching something on youtube, the song stops and starts etc and the whole computer just seems to slow down. Do i need more memory? I don't have much stuff stored on it - i've got an external hard drive which i keep most of my things on. I've defragmented, ran spyware, got up to date virus prog etc.

Using a registry cleaner can clean up your computer and then make your computer faster,Why?the reason is that there may be some regsitry errors and remnant, corrupt files and temp files in your computer to cause "computer slow".

Hey Vikki
Good day to you, I see you got a problem on your desktop there.
Ok first things Firefox do take up a lot of resource, I had that same problem a few days ago.. I hated that feeling like if you are waiting forever to see the page load, sometimes I felt like smashing my pc to the floor and piss on it!

There could be a few factors
1. You may need more memory..512 mininum
2.Also you must understad that even though you defrag you pc , all the packets are still stored on your computer, they do not disappear into the atmostphere. So its possible that your registry need some cleaning.

Vikki I could go on and on but I want to introduce to a simple program that will transform your pc.
Vikki , this program will enable you to Discover the amazing First 5 Steps to a Blazing PC... Ensure your computer gets prepped correctly before making tweaks...

There are also some hidden settings that when tweaked can boost your computer performance by up to 250%!... Not your average tweaks, These tweaks are guaranteed to speed up ANY COMPUTER not just slow computers!

I hope you find this helpful.

Open the task manager by pressing Ctrl Alt Delete at the same time. It will tell you what CPU% is being used and how much memory is being used. Click on the processes tab to see what is using up CPU and memory. This should help you figure out what is slowing things down and weather it's a faster CPU or more RAM that you need.

Add memory is very good !!

but before you add it, Do you have run the registry cleaner ?

Because in Windows, registry sometime (always) make your computer slow....
it is same with the defragmented problem, everything you do windows will write in his registry (you install program, make shortcut, uninstall, and else).... but in the process windows sometimes get confuse went the registry is bigger and bigger...

So.... same with your harddrive, you must clean the registry
look for registry cleaner program (you can search at www.download.com).... it is will help.........

Because even you buy / add more memory but your registry is bad.... it will be useless.....

Oh ya..... if you using the Windows media player it is eat a lot memory... try another light program for run a music..

and for browsing issue.... It is not recommended to open a pages more than 2.... because it will effect to your internet speed....
(ex : if your internet speed is : 64 k/sec ... if you open 2 page it will be 32 k/sec each page....)

hi vicki
you have done all the correct checks ,such as defragging and ran spyware scans, and as these are all ok it looks like you are in need of extra memory
lucky for you vicki this is not such as expensive upgrade, depending on the type of memory you need this can be as little as £25 for a 1gb module
so if you currently have say 512mb ddr ram then you should double your current memory,so in your case 1gb,if you allready have 1gb then 2gb and so on
also if your running vista you need 1gb as a minimum amount of memory, and if its vista ultimate 2gb is a minimum
the reason your music keeps stopping is due to the "buffering",this is when the p.c cannot stream as fast as the music(or video) is playing, there are ways to stop this such as lowering the streams level(from 300k to 100k) or by running just the stream and no other background tasks(multi tasking)
although more memory is allways a added bonus, problems with video and music streams are more than likely to do with your broadband connection speed
so a faster internet connection speed will give you a better streaming experience,to check your current broadband speed go to http://www.broadbandspeedtest.net/ and download "Dan Elwell's Broadband Speed Test",this will test your connection speed and give you a report and if problems arise how to fix them
one good way of increasing your broadband speed is by simply switching off your broadband router/hub from the mains, and leave off for two minutes, then switch it back on,wait for all the lights to become lit again then run the broadband speed test once more....you should see much better speeds and ping times
also if you use a u.s.b lead as a connection from your p.c to the router or hub, then change this for a ethernet lead, this is much better and more reliable, and also dosent require a driver
as you also use firefox as a browser then you should download the spyware program "spyware blaster" from http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html,this unlike most anti-spyware software protects your p.c online while using "mozzila firefox"
however after a while windows tends to become "bogged down" and even without a virus or spyware will seem to work slower, this can be due to identical files, registry errors and missing dlls deleted during a uninstallation which all in themselves can make windows slow and sluggish
so my final advice is its sometimes best just to bite the bullet and reinstall your operating system,or even upgrade to windows vista, which is much more secure than windows xp
another check is to go to control panel>windows firewall>and chck to see if theres any firewall exceptions that are no longer valid, even after you remove programs that have a windows exception then removal dosent include the firewall settings, you need to do this yourself(remember)a open port or exception on your firewall is just like leaving your p.c open for anyone to use(with full administrive rights),and this in itself would dramatically slow down your computer
any more advice let me know
good luck vicki !

Its looking like a memory issue.

But one thing to be aware of if you are using an external hard drive, any data that you access from an external drive takes longer to access/transfer than an internal drive.

Your processor may be too slow to do all the multitasking you're trying to make it do -- either that our you need more memory (RAM) so the computer doesn't have to continually page data from RAM to disk and visa versa. Ensure you don't have any spyware -- these things suck performance like mad.

yes u need more memory ... but along with it there is actually a limit wen talkin bout da bandwidth of ur internet connection ... doin 2 or more web based processes simultaneously requires not only physical memory but also sufficient amount of bandwidth and download speed .....

you have to get more RAM (random access memory) it'll speed thing up. But see if your system supports that kind of ram.

Good Luck
