On October 3, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln issued a formal proclamation, passed by an Act of Congress, initiating the first annual National Day of Thanksgiving:
"No human counsel hath devised, nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the most high God, who, while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy...
I do, therefore, invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and those who are sojourning in the foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the heavens....[it is] announced in the Holy Scriptures and proven by all history, that those nations are blesses whose God is the Lord....It has seemed to me fit and proper that God should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledge, as with one heart and one voice, by the whole American people."
-America's God and Country Encyclopedia of Quotations
LOL, concerning food, Thanksgiving is usually celebrated with turkey, etc. Christmas food traditionally tends to be ham. Also, many families cook a pie (or two) for Thanksgiving (most often pumpkin pie), whereas Christmas is celebrated with an assortment of sweets.

Thanksgiving Day is the day set aside to give thanks for all that you have (I know...you should give thanks every day); the roof over your head, the food you eat, the people in your life, the clothes on your back.
The Day was started to honor the first successful harvest of the Pilgrims and their friendship with the Native Americans who helped them to be successful in this new world.
I think that no matter who you are and how much or how little you have, it is always good to give thanks. If you only do it one day a year...well...that's better than never.

Well, originally it started out as a feast that the Pilgrims had to cement relations with the Native Americans, and it grew and spread from there. Then it became the yearly 'thanks for a bountiful harvest' holiday. Now, to many Americans, it's simply a day where you spend time with your family and eat a whopping huge dinner (turkey!!!) and have good times. ^_^

It's a day for us to share the bounty we enjoy in this country and give thanks to Him who provided it.
Even for people who don't believe in God, they can be thankful to fate or destiny or whatever for all they have. We have a lot in this country, and it's easy to take it for granted. Here we can sit back and reflect on how blessed we are, or how good we have it or however it works for you.
It's also a day for women to slave in the kitchen and men to watch football...unless you get him to fry that turkey in the back yard.
