It happens to me every now and then, and usually it's because there are certain aspects of the music I like, and others that I don't, and I can't which wins out.

Two examples are the bands A Fire Inside and Dark Room Notes. Here they are if you don't know them:

AFI - "Love Like winter"

DRN - "Love Like Nicotine" & "Shake My Ceiling"

So, does this ever happen to you?

I know what you mean about 80's bands. And I really like the Shout Out Louds, but they do have a fair few tracks that are just average.

i would've said they sound more like a modern day Cure. They're almost like a Cure clone, at least this year's album "Our Ill Wills".

It's especially happens when it's 80's bands... there's a very thin line that can be crossed that pushes a band into the "hair metal" category that I don't like and just a regular band that has a lot of 80's influence.
And there are some bands like the Shout Out Louds that I'm liking, but it also sounds a tad bit mediocre, so I'm not sure yet.

EDIT: Well, the Shout Out Louds sound a bit like a combo of Bright Eyes (at least Conor Oberst's vocals) and The 88. I haven't gotten an album yet, just heard a few songs my sister gave me.

I'm really struggling with Operator right now. The singer sounds like Chris Coronell, and some of the songs are really solid, but there are other elements on the album that just make me want to skip the songs. I can't decide if this will be an eBay casualty or a CD shelf dust collector.

Rarely, but it has happened to me. The Flaming Lips is a great example for me. I really wanted to like them and they have a couple songs where the package comes together just right, but at the end of the day I just don't get it. I should like them, I like what they're about, all the people around me that like the stuff that I do like them, I think they're cool (in the sense of a good show, a good sensibility). I just can't get into it.

I tend to flip flop a lot. It's only natural. It takes several songs to get a real strong handle on a verdict one way or the other.

Anything off Decemberunderground isn't the best material when judging AFI. I would go back to their earlier albums to get a better indication of their body of work.

Jmikep69 - The first time I heard Operator, I thought it was Chris Cornell. They sound almost identical. Pretty amazing actually.

Yes, it happens quite often to me. Unfortunately I can't say I like many bands. Sometimes I like only a couple of songs by a band/singer, whereas the other I just can't stand them. Anyway I think that "Love Like Winter" is awesome.

Dude, I love AFI, especially the song Love Like Winter... but I totally know what you mean by not being sure if you like them. They're really not my type at all, but they're awesome.

No artist really stands out for this question, but most artists I have a little difficulty deciding.

No 90% of the time I can tell right away if a band has any musical talent or not. If they do and their music doesn't annoy Me I will probably like them. If they don't why bother?

not usually. i give a band about 5 seconds of my time and based on that is where i place my favor or otherwise. there are so many bands out there that i can really only give them seconds to impress me. i can't really straddle the fence on bands. i guess that's why i'm so extremely picky about what i listen to.

Yes. Ill overthink it, and just get so confused on where I stand. For me, this usually happens with the indie-quirky bands.
