The womb, or uterus, is an organ in a woman. It's where a baby would grow if she gets pregnant, and where the blood comes from when she gets her period.

It actually is a pretty cool organ. In a non-pregnant woman, it's about the size of a fist, but it can expand to contain an entire baby. Every month it builds up a lining of tissue with a brand new network of blood vessels in order to nourish a baby, and then sheds those and begins anew if no baby is present. And those irritating menstrual cramps? They're actually a lot less severe than they would be if they were happening to any other organ, because (get this), the uterus releases its own drugs! The same sorts of chemicals as in opium and marijuana! Nifty, huh?

The uterus or womb is the major female reproductive organ of most mammals, including humans. One end, the cervix, opens into the vagina; the other is connected on both sides to the fallopian tubes. The term uterus is commonly used within the medical and related professions, whilst womb is in more common usage. The plural of uterus is uteri.
