In 1659, Massachusetts was a part of the British empire. Massachusetts declared indepoendence from British rule in 1776. Therefore, any laws under British rule would no longer be valid.

Massachusetts became subject to the laws of it's new country, the United States of America, forst under the Articles of Confederation, and later under the U.S. Constituition, which in 1792 replaced the Articles of Conderation.

As English law was replaced, it is no longer valid. Christmas is not currently illegal in Massachusetts.

And for the record, Massachusetts was colonized by Christians. In 1659, the colony was under Christian rule. As these particlar Christians wer predominately Puritans, a sect which wanted to escape corruption and live a more Godly lifestyle, the primary reason for banning Christmas was probably due to the pagan aspects (such as December 25th borrowed from Mythrism and the Christmas tree borrowed from Germanic tribes) that have crept into Christian tradition over the past 2 millenia.

And no, I don't think Christmas should be banned in a country that advocates religious freedom. While I do not think Christams should be forced on those who choose not to celebrate, I feel those of us who do should be allowed to celebrate in peace.

If you ban Christmas, you also have to ban the Jewsih holiday of Hannukah, the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, and any other religious festival or observance.

The beauty of living in a country that offers freedom to choose ones religion is that I get to choose to celebrate Christmas, and you have an equal opportunity to choose what you would like to celebrate.

Christmas should be enjoyed by everyone. I live in Massachusetts and I'm not Christian yet I still celebrate Christmas.

Well, I don't know...so many years ago, & it has done so well there! Everytime I go up there during the Christmas season, I still see lights & Chirstmas trees, in city & town centers to boot!
Yeah, that law worked well, didn't it!

The ban was repealed in 1681.

It was also not a ban on "Christmas" - it was a ban on festivities to celebrate it.

Remember, they were puritans.
