Is it possible I can connect my desktop and my laptop together from LAN-to-LAN port? Just one straight wire without any ethernet HUB or anything.

Thanks

You will need to do two things:

1. If you computers are older you will need a Crossover cable as jim suggests, however all newer computers (I would say less than 3 years old) Will do what is called Auto MDI-X which basically allows a standard cable to become a crossover cable.

2. You will need to assign ip addresses on the same subnet for the computers to be able to talk - do NOT rely on autoconfiguration.

For example. You have ComputerA and ComputerB to get them to talk we will put them on the 192.168.0/24 private addressing scheme.
in ComputerA's configuration you would assign an IP of 192.168.1.1 a subnet of 255.255.255.0 and a default gateway of 192.168.1.1 - you don't really need the default gateway because it just tells you computer where to send packets not destined for the current subnet but I feel wierd not putting it in.

In ComputerB's configuration you would assign an IP of 192.168.1.2 a subnet of 255.255.255.0 and a default gateway of 192.168.1.1 (again not really needed)

To do this on WindowsXP:
right click on My network Places
Go To properties
Right click on your Network Adapter (Normally "Local Area Connection")
Double Click on Internet Connection (TCP/IP)

Click on the 'Use This Ip Address' Radio Button, and enter your info.

You'll need to use a cross over cable rather than a regularly wired Ethernet cable.

From the Wiki link below:

Ethernet crossover cable is a type of Ethernet cable used to connect computing devices together directly where they would normally be connected via a network switch, hub or router. For example, one would use a crossover cable to directly connect two personal computers via their network adapters.

Connecting a 2nd laptop to the internet with the aid of employing ICS (internet Connection Sharing) has some hazards: It eats reminiscence on the laptop linked to the modem. That laptop must be on for the different one to get admission to the internet. That laptop is slowed down with the aid of getting to provider requests from the different laptop (that is performing as a router). a real router is inexpensive and removes the subject concerns.

No! You need a switcher that connects the two computers with one monitor and printer. You cannot run the 2 computer at the same time with one monitor unless u have a specialize hardware and software.
