The emphasis on the game is that your character may improve any of their skills by practicing enough. you run around and kill stuff to get better at fighting, go mine to get better at mining, bring the ore back and smelt it to get better at smelting, etc...

the game allows for you to use spells, archery, melee combat, and even prayer to fight your enemies. you can also collect varios items to craft weapons, armor, and many other useful in game items.
