I want to buy a tortoise but I don't think I have enough money for all the things that it would need. Would I be able to provide essentials AND buy things that it would like for about £200-£250?

I don't think so.

Check these classifieds and there might be an unwanted tortoise and setup for around that or maybe even less.

Here you go! Just type tortoise int he search box or whatever ;)

A word of caution! Please please PLEASE check caresheets for the type of tortoise you are thinking of getting BEFORE you buy. The set-up offered might not be very suitable.

Google works a charm ;)

i do not think you could a tortoise in Britain goes for 150 - 250 pounds, then you need the correct heating proper housing, you may be able to get a horsefeild with tortoise table and set up from the tortoise shop on the Internet go there and check out the prices, also if you are thinking of getting a tortoise then please do your research about them first, they are exotic pets and you need to know what you are doing or you could end up killing your new pet, a good place for research to begin is the tortoise trust web site they have care sheets on all tortoises and turtles and would be more than willing to give you proper advice, please if you are buying a tortoise go to a reputable breeder and make sure you get all the correct paperwork for your pet some tortoises are covered under CITES and need to be registered, good luck honey hope this helps you. just as an added bit i hope you realise that getting a tortoise is the least expensive bit, you have to be prepared to take your pet to a specialist vet if it gets sick and this can be really expensive,

Try and visit a pet store selling tortoises - though please avoid those that don't look after their animals - trust me I have seen two/three within the last few months trading quite well because people will still buy from these people and the welfare of the animal (as seen) is not paramount - it simply is about money. There are many good stores out there, seek them out and though I'm sure you'll be paying more than £200 for a whole complete set up (including Tortoise) it'll be worth it.

I would also advise you to bear in mind the cost of veterinary bills. These will be higher than for any other domestic pet due to it being a more specialist pet.

I can't speak to specific costs but when I was taking a box turtle to the vet someone else had his rock tortoise with him. He told me that, due to some recent health issues with the tortoise, he had spent more on the little green guy in the past month than he had spent on a horse in the previous year. The tortoise was 17, btw. If you are concerned that you cannot afford the initial outlay, it may be good to hold off/save up until you can afford maintainence as well.

Its worth keeping your eye in your local Ad Mag. You'd probably be pushing it to get a brand new set up from a shop for your kind of budget but you can get some good deals second hand. It also depends what kind of size tortoise your looking to get. I bought my horsefield when he was a baby for £170.

Getting a good habitat set up for a tortoise can cost quite a bit- lighting, heating, humidity, housing, etc.

Give http://www.tortoisetrust.org a try- being in the UK, they can give you some good guidelines.

not very likely. unless you are very lucky you tend to find that if someone is selling torties cheap there is something wrong with them, or they have been obtained illegally. as far as i am aware they have to have some kind of official paperwork with them but cant remember what the certificate is called.
