Checked the filter and still no joy. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Mine did this and it turned out it was something in the transmission. Time for a new washer if that's the case with yours - you'll be money ahead. Plus the new ones have rebates & use less energy & water, so bonus for you.

Could just be a slipping/worn belt....look under the machine for lots of little black bits or residue. Replace it with a new one....make sure it's the correct size...old one may have a part number on it.

YOUR DRAIN PIPE MIGHT BE PARTIALLY BLOCKED MAKING THE WATER GO BACK IN TO THE CLOTHES. REMOVE THE DRAIN PIPE IF POSSIBLE OR HAVE A REPAIR MAN DO IT FOR YOU, THEY HAVE THE PROPER TOOLS TO CLEAN OUT A DRAIN PIPE.
