Real Madrid because it is one of the most successful football clubs of the 20th century having won 30 La Liga titles 17 Copa del Rey and being European Champions for a record 9 times.

There are two major ranking systems for Soccer clubs. One is by Forbes, the other by Deloitte.
Forbes uses a formula-based approach, and ranks the top ten as follows:
Manchester United
Real Madrid
Arsenal
Bayern Munich
AC Milan
Juventus
Internazionale Milan
Chelsea
Barcelona
Shalke 04
United get the nod over Real because of their better positioning in the EPL. Even though Real has greater income currently, the EPL's own brand and marketing far outweigh the Spanish league, so MU have the better oportunities to grow. This would agree with the original question - MU definitely has the greatest brand in soccer.
Deloitte ranks purely on revenue; the current rankings are apparently incomplete, but the top three are Real Madrid, Barcelona and Arsenal.

Google Forbes. They did a report on the richest football clubs a few years ago (before Arsenal built the Emirates though)

Manchester United. I hate to use this for a comparison but Man U is to football (soocer) as the Yankee's are to baseball.
