Don't have time to dig up a ton of examples, but I only see/hear it on YA, never in real life, but I don't associate with ignorant people on a regular basis.

Yes I do and I am transplanted from Kansas to Texas and Texans are the worst I've seen in that regard, thinking they are better than others.

we're all from America first and our state allegiance should be 2nd.

I don't think people really criticize each other, per se. I think it's more of a "hometown loyalty" sentiment. Having moved from Ohio to Florida for a year last year, I couldn't help but look at everything around me and compare it to Ohio and think how much better Ohio was.
I never really criticized Florida or its people but I did feel a certain since of pride about being from Ohio and the North.
I think it's more pathetic that Americans criticize and look down upon other countries and foreign societies.

I think it's territorial & (almost) always in jest. We generally stand behind each other as Americans, but it's a type of adult play. Sorta like 'my brother can beat up ypur brother' or 'my new toy is better than yours'.

Honestly though, yeah Yankees talk funny & don't eat good things like greens, okra, beans with nearly every meal, chicken fried steak & don't forget the sweet-tea! GOOD OL' U.S. of A. !! Free to be different & let's keep it that way.

There are those who criticize folk on the basis of political party, moral stand, or a number of other things only. The state is just one. But yes it is pathetic, in all cases.

Yeah, you're right. But, I've learned that that's everywhere in the world. People always poke fun and criticize people in the next state, province, region, or what ever. It's just what people do, and have always done. Where do you think all those Neanderthal jokes originated?

Unfortunately its just human nature. We are naturally proud of where we came from and where we are. You even find it within regions in the same area. Its not reasonable by any means but just take it with a grain of salt. It is what it is.

It's human nature. People criticize people from other countries just because they're from other countries. That's ridiculous, too, but that's what people do. It's not limited to the U.S. and states.

Thats about having pride in who you are and where your from. Its like somebody having on a nike shirt and me saying fila is better cause that would have been what I was wearing and what I'd been wearing for years.

Its very similar to racism. If you're black, people assume you will behave in a certain way because they think ALL black people are like that. So if you are from a state like California or Texas, they will assume you behave in a certain ways or believe in certain things because they think ALL Californians or Texans are like that. Ditto with people from other countries.
