I paid off my home loan 4 years ago, and while looking through the paperwork I received I realized that I have never gotten the deed. How do I go about getting a deed if I don't have it, and the mortgage company has no clue either?

You should already have the deed to the house (a grant deed, warranty deed, quitclaim deed)....as the first poster said, what you are looking for is an "acknowledgment of satisfaction of mortgage" or a "deed of reconveyance"

The deed is usually filed with the County Recorder. They should be able to get you the deed.

If you purchased the home, the previous seller signed the deed over to you. The title agent mailed it to the county recorders office and it is filed it court records.

where are you?

state laws vary and the responsible party in such a case is determined by state law.

use google to find your state's law regarding "satisfaction of mortgage" -- it'll tell you who should have done what.
