Besides these: onions, garlic, black pepper. I don't like the taste of any prepared stew powdered mixes. I think the Tumeric is what I don't like.

I didn't know there was such a thing as a prepared stew powdered mix.

The onions, garlic and black pepper (fresh ground) are pretty much enough. The trick is to brown the meat in the bottom of the pot (sprinkle w/salt & pepper first) before adding the other ingredients.

I will use some decent red wine and a few bay leaves. Other spices you might add are strictly to your own taste. I love spice and flavor, but it's easy to mess up a simple dish.

Using whole, small onions can be fun too (the really small ones). I love the way they taste after cooking in the gravy.

peace

Have you been spying on me? I just made a beef stew for tomorrow. (It's always better the next day) Apart from the beef, I put lentils(black and red) pearl barley, dried beans of any kind, a tin of tomato soup, beef stock cube, herbes de provence(mixed herbs) carrot, onion, parsnip, and swede.Add enough water to cover and a splash of red wine if you have it.Cook very slowly for a few hours and leave till next day. Then give it a good stir, and cook very slowly again. Make some dumplings, and add to the hot stew about twenty minutes before serving (with the lid on.) Scrummy!( Sorry if anything gets lost in translation. I am English)

I use something called Garlic Plus from Club House,Wal-Mart has it as does Food Basic. Orange top.

I also put a bit of salt in mine , maybe a little rosemary for the potatoes.

Now tumeric I'd have never thought of putting it my beef stew. I use tumeric in rice , with orange juice and raisins or orange flavoured craisins.

I am totally intrigued by your nick name. Please explain at some point. "Beef Stew", Yum! Yum!
Whenever we have meat on the bone (Turkey, chicken or beef) Sorry vegans! we boil the bones down for stock. This is always the basis for our "stews".
A quick and easy "stew" is, stock, mince, any veg you can think of and potatoes. All chucked in the same saucepan for about an hour, on low and Hey Presto! A delicious meal and only one saucepan and two plates to wash up. We don't even add spices because it is so delicious on its own.

I add basil, oregano, garlic, celery, and a little red wine. I sometimes use Lipton's Onion Soup Mix for flavor.

I think you'll find a splash of cream sherry does wonders for beef dishes. I also use the sea salt and peppercorn grinders. I might add a small portion of minced garlic, too. I think too many spices can overwhelm the wonderful natural flavors, so I'd stop there.
