I'm no senior (yet!), but did purchase a Select Comfort. Ours is a pillow top king and cost approx. $2500. My partner has fibromyalgia and can only find comfort in this bed. It allows you to adjust the mattress to change the firmness of the mattress. I look at it as a very glorified, very comfortable air mattress with benefits!
BTW - we DID test it by staying in a Radisson. That's why we decided to buy one. Try it out; the Radisson had the less plush version, though.

Yes. We have a "Select Comfort" bed.
We've had it for about six years and I guess it works for us because I am a sleep number (100) and my husband is a (40). We haven't had any problems with it which is surprising because of the way it is constructed.
I would guess that installation was offered but we chose to do it ourselves. So you can guess how dumb struck we were when we received two large square boxes that contained our King Size bed!
We put it together in no time at all and it was very easy. Also very interesting. We had to put these plastic baffles into the mattress cover and then zip it up. Obviously, the baffles are what hold the air.
I'm also impressed that it actually holds the air and requires an adjustment only occasionally.
The electric pump is hooked up under the bed and needs a dedicated electric outlet.
I think the Select Comfort may be helpful for back problems because of the range of firmness that you can adjust it to. As to the price and warranty...I believe we paid $2k. We have had no reason to use the warranty but I think it was a very long one. We'll see what the future holds!
Would I buy one again? I really can't say. I would probably shop around and see what's new.

My husband and I bought one 12 years ago; and like it very much. Ours is a King Size, pillow top with dual controls. We've never had any problems with it. Even after 12 years it is still comfortable.
It does come in boxes and needs to be set up. That is one of the reasons we bought it, our bedroom is on the second floor, and carrying the boxes up our twisty staircase was easy.
The only challenge we've had is keeping the sheet tucked into the foot of the bed. The mattress is very light, and it's easy to kick the top sheet off....although this bothers me more than my husband. The light mattress makes it a breeze to change the sheets and lift the mattress for vacuuming/cleaning.
Select Comfort beds are nothing like waterbeds. Even if you set the controls to a softer level, you should still be able to get in and out of bed without any problems....and if you need a firmer surface to push yourself up out bed, then you push the button to make it firmer to get up, and reset it when you go back to bed. My husband can toss and turn and I barely feel it, no bouncing, and no rolling.
It might take several nights for you to find the level that you like, but once you do it is a very comfortable mattress.

I've heard mixed opinions about them, and the same with the Tempur Pedics (too hot; they don't breathe because they're made from foam.) Another friend said his best plan was to go to a recognized bedding store (one that's been in business for awhile) and try out the various mattresses in the store. Usually, the older established lines are still very reliable. Some of the newer ones are quite expensive, and I'd rather buy from a company that's been in the business for many years.

Yes I did buy one... I wish I had not... however, my husband loves it! Go figure! His back problems are a little different than mine are... I slept in one at the Raddison, it was wonderful... I don't understand that at all, other than it was a king and mine is a Queen. The foundation resembles one of those large plastic castle things you would buy for the grand kids... only it has a cover... a wooden box would suffice. I have been thinking that a platform with drawers in it would be great with one of these beds!
The guest bed has a 4" memory foam topper on it and that is the one I love, my husband says it's to warm for him and it's hard to roll over on... Again, go figure!

My friends have two - and I stayed with them over the summer. It was like sleeping on a cloud. Nothing like a water bed. I slept so soundly and felt really rested when I awoke - - - I wanted one for myself. And they did not have the most expensive ones either. Regrettably this bed is not in my budget as I bought a new bed last winter! Bummer!

If that is the one with the air, yes! It is a fabulous matress. I slept on one when I was visiting my brother for three weeks. The annoying pain I have even with my three inch on memory foam completely disappeared when I was at my brothers. I think I am going to buy one.

I asked about this too....maybe Phil will pop in and give you his theory on sleeping on a blow up mattress. I've tried one at a local furniture retailer and momentarily it felt great.
I couldn't sleep on the Tempur Pedic, too hot for me and because of arthritis I toss and turn a lot and it's not conducive to letting you do that, it sort of cradles you.
If you buy a sleep number bed, please be sure to let me know what you think! Thanks!

Yes - my best friend here in the DC area bought one about 6 mos. ago. It cost just under $1K....and when they delivered it it took some time to install and set up...not to mention if you move it must be moved by them too. Anyhow, she says it comfy and she sleeps better, however, you have to reset the number each time you get in the bed....and it takes awhile to 'set' as it adjusts to your body.
Edit: nothing like a water bed...it doesn't 'move' like that...it's pockets of air...
There's a free video you can order online to get more definitive info

That is the one with air. We have the tempur pedic foam and it is the best sleeping ever. No pressure points and I hardly roll over or toss and turn anymore.
