there are two types of blood test. 1. qualatative, which is basically like a hpt, it spins the urin like substance to the top of the blood and test from that. and 2. quantative, which is a test that gives a number of your HcG in blood. i would find another dr. if they were to do test 2 then there would be no doubt if you were or werent. i was 4 weeks prego and the e.r. did test 1 it was negative, however two weeks later (6 weeks prego) my dr. sent me for test 2 (i recently miscarried and they retest to ensure your levels are normal) and found out i was prego. find a new dr.

The blood test is far more accurate. It does test the same hormone but for some women, the hormone does not show up in their urine. If your doctor denied you a blood test, ask for a reason why. If it is not a valid reason like, it is still to early to tell, go to a different doctor. That sounds very fishy. If you are willing to get the test done, I do not see why they would not have given it. If you are that worried, go to the ER. They will test you. I wouldn't be worried that you are 8 days late though yet. You could be stressed thinking that you are pregnant and the body could be reacting. Wait a week and test again. Try to relax and find yourself a good doctor. Good Luck

It really depends on why you visited the doctor and what sort of tests they ordered. If you presented with very general symptoms (such as being tired or down) the GP would generally do some routine tests. Normally these tests look at some of the mineral levels in your blood, some hormone levels, blood sugar levels and blood count. Because these tests are so general, the idea is that if something was wrong some of these levels would be abnormal. This would give the GP an idea of where to look to find the source of any problem. As I said, these tests are general and any specific disease tests (such as for a sexually transmitted disease) should be discussed first. To answer your question, these general tests can not rule out disease or infection but generally can give indications of disease. The most important information for you and your doctor is not your blood results, but how you are feeling. Many serious illnesses such as mental illness or depression will show very few abnormal blood results but can be more debilitating than a physical problem. So the most important thing is to not get hung up on tests and investigations but to talk openly about your lifestyle and problems so that you doctor can quickly get to the root of any illness and help you treat the problem. hope you feel better soon.

With 3 of my 4 pregnancies, not a single at home urine test worked, each time I had to get a blood test done to confirm...it works off of the same theory, as the urine test, checking for hcg, but it is much more sensitive, and accurate, and shows results sooner than a urine test, because it can pick up fainter traces of hcg in your blood earlier. It isn't unusual for women sometimes to be late, or completely miss a period, but knowing you were active during fertile times,I think they were wrong to try and make you feel like it was pointless...and I would defiantly go back and demand one done.

Whoever told you that was either very uneducated and thus should not be working in a medical facility, or they misunderstood you. A blood test is more accurate than a home test, period - and especially if they do the one that measures the exact amount of hCG in your body (as opposed to one that says simply "yes" or "no" as to whether there is a predetermined amount of hCG--kinda like a urine test). Urine tests at the doctor's office are equally accurate as urine tests at home, so maybe they were confused about what you were asking for. You definitely could still be pregnant. Find somewhere else to have a bloodtest done.

You have to insist on having it done. Blood work is NOT the same as urine tests, it detects the same hormone, but in lower quantities. Its totally different.
Some women just dont produce enough hormones for the urine tests until later in, but will show on blood work. My mom was pregnant with me, did the HTP's and the urine test at the doctors, she insisted on blood work, they refused, she made them. Sure enough, she was pregnant.
Do you not have insurance? Or are they a busy office? They will push you through if they can find a reason, theyre so over worked and its hard for them to get money for things that arent needed. Either go back and insist, or find a better office.

Most doctors will give you a blood test if your period is later than usual. A blood test detects hcg at a much lower level than a urine test. Can't you go to another doctor or find a clinic that will give you a blood test?

Actually, the blood test is way more sensitive and sometimes an HPT won't pick up the HCG in the urine. How aweful that they treated you that way. That was wrong and unprofessional, and it is not their business why you are getting a test. I would go back and have your blood drawn, just to make sure.

that was the dumbest thing i have ever heard! of course a blood test is more accurate and can detect pregnancy earlier than a urine tests. people of people get negetives on a urine test and then get a positive on a blood test. id go somewhere else and give it a try. maybe those girls just didnt want to do it for some reason.

If you are pregnant a test that checks urine is more accurate than a blood test at this time. I took a home pregnancy test after four days of missing my period and it showed up positive. Since I wanted to know for sure I called my friend who works at the hospital. She asked a friend who works in the lab. She said that in early stages of pregnancy checking the urine is more accurate than blood.
