I live in a house where i pay electricity, gas, cable, and rent. Today my roomate brings up to me that i havent yet paid for the washer and dryer. I was like, um what? This was over email. I am not sure if it mentions this in my lease, but does this seem weird???

if it isn't in the lease, you aren't obligated to pay

that said, it likely does save you from that dreadful once a week trip to the laundromat and the 3 to 4 hours you'd spend there, so maybe it is worth paying something.

bargain on it.

if you have kitchen rights though, don't pay to use the appliances. Their use comes with kitchen rights.

Read the lease! If it's not in the lease, tell your roommate that you've paid your share for the utilities and that's all your obligated to pay. Sounds like they just may be trying to get some extra money out of you. You already help to pay for the expenses of the washer and dryer in your share of the utilities (electricity, gas, water).

It's not very common to pay for this separately, but if it was written in the lease and you simply didn't notice it... well, you'll have to pay.
You see, almost anything and everything can be put into a lease. If somebody signs a lease stating that parking of a red car is more than parking of a blue car, then you have to pay because you singed it (it's just a silly example, but I've seen a lot of silly things in contracts...)

some places will rent you the washer and dryer at some much a month. This is probably what you roommate is talking about. my apartment complex rents them for 30 bucks a month which is not a bad price.

If use of the washer and dryer is not in the lease then your room mate does not have to let you use them. If the lease gives you use all appliances then I would say that covers the washer, dryer, dishwasher, garbage disposal, stove, fridge.

obviously if you are paying for electricity and gas you are already paying to use the washer and dryer
